CoStar Group’s CRE-focused news team was recently selected for a pair of prestigious journalism awards by the National Association of Real Estate Editors (NAREE). The awards, which were presented at the group’s annual conference in New Orleans earlier this month, recognize excellence in reporting, writing and editing about residential and commercial real estate.
CoStar Senior News Editor Mark Heschmeyer won NAREE’s Silver Award in the "Best Series" category for his reporting on the fallout from federal student loan changes on for-profit universities. Heschmeyer’s series detailed the extensive real estate impact on the formerly high flying sector, which had leased millions of square feet as part of a rapid expansion.
“This series shed light on an under-reported phenomenon: as a result of new federal (student loan) regulations, many for-profit colleges and universities are closing locations, creating empty campuses and challenges and opportunities in leases,” the judges wrote.
In addition, NAREE awarded CoStar Senior News Editor Randyl Drummer an honorable mention in the “Best Online Commercial Real Estate Story” category for a piece on the increasing number of older, obsolete office buildings being converted into trendy apartments in downtown areas.
A panel of judges from the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University reviewed all submissions and selected the winners. Other winners in the two categories included Bloomberg News, The Real Deal
and the Orange County Register
